Mumbai: Mehul Shah has been elected President of the World Federation of Diamond Bourses (WFDB), placing an experienced Indian diamond-industry representative at the head of one of the trade’s leading international organisations. The announcement has been welcomed by Bharat Diamond Bourse (BDB), which described Shah’s election as a proud achievement for the institution and India’s wider diamond community. As WFDB President, Shah is expected to engage with member bourses across major diamond centres, encourage cooperation within the international trade and represent the industry on issues affecting the movement, marketing and responsible sourcing of diamonds. His appointment comes at a critical stage for the natural-diamond sector. The industry is responding to changing consumer behaviour, economic uncertainty, evolving regulations, increased demand for traceability and competition from laboratory-grown diamonds. Effective coordination between global trading centres will therefore remain an important part of the federation’s agenda. Shah’s election also highlights the international significance of Bharat Diamond Bourse, with which he has been closely associated. Located in Mumbai’s Bandra-Kurla Complex, BDB is one of the world’s largest organised diamond-trading centres and a key institution within India’s gems and jewellery industry. The bourse has more than 4,000 members involved in the import, export, manufacturing and trading of rough and polished diamonds. Its secured business complex brings together diamond companies, financial institutions, customs facilities, insurance providers, gemmological laboratories and other essential trade-support services within a single ecosystem. India plays a central role in the global diamond supply chain, particularly in cutting, polishing, manufacturing and exports. Shah’s elevation is therefore expected to provide Indian stakeholders with a stronger voice in international discussions concerning the future of the diamond business. Bharat Diamond Bourse congratulated Shah and expressed confidence in his ability to guide the global diamond community with vision, integrity and a collaborative approach. His leadership is expected to deepen engagement between international bourses while reinforcing India’s position within the worldwide diamond trade.
