IIGJ CEO Debasish Biswas Nominated To GJSCI Board Representing GJEPC
India: Debasish Biswas, Chief Executive Officer of the Indian Institute of Gems & Jewellery (IIGJ), has been nominated to the Board of Directors of the Gems & Jewellery Skill Council of India (GJSCI), representing the Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC).

The nomination marks an important development for India’s gems and jewellery skill ecosystem, bringing together education, industry representation and workforce development at a time when the sector is focusing on stronger technical training, modern manufacturing capabilities and future-ready talent.

GJSCI operates under the aegis of the National Skill Development Corporation (NSDC) and functions under the Ministry of Skill Development & Entrepreneurship (MSDE). The council plays an important role in supporting skill development, certification and training frameworks for India’s gems and jewellery industry.

IIGJ, an initiative associated with GJEPC, has been actively involved in training and preparing students for careers across jewellery design, manufacturing, gemmology, retail and related industry segments. With Biswas joining the GJSCI Board, the institute’s role in connecting education with industry requirements is expected to gain further relevance.

The nomination also reflects the increasing importance of structured skill development in the gems and jewellery sector. As the industry adopts new technologies, digital tools, design software, advanced manufacturing systems and modern retail practices, the need for trained professionals has become more critical.

Through representation on the GJSCI Board, industry-led education institutions such as IIGJ can contribute to discussions around curriculum development, practical training, employability, certification standards and the evolving skill needs of jewellery businesses.

The development is significant for students, manufacturers, retailers and training institutions, as India continues to strengthen its position in global gems and jewellery manufacturing and exports. A stronger skill development framework can help the industry improve productivity, quality, innovation and competitiveness.

The nomination of Debasish Biswas highlights the growing collaboration between GJEPC, IIGJ and GJSCI in building a more organised talent pipeline for the jewellery industry. It also underlines the sector’s focus on preparing young professionals for both traditional craftsmanship and new-age jewellery technology.
