Mumbai: GOLDSENSE™, a portable, AI-powered digital karatometer developed by India Gold Metaverse (IGM), is designed to support gold purity verification across jewellery retail, gold loan operations and pawnshops. The compact device combines subsurface metal assessment, digital reporting and customer-facing results, offering an alternative approach to conventional purity-testing equipment.
One of the key challenges in old-gold exchanges, buybacks and loan evaluations is identifying jewellery with concealed base metals or thick gold plating. Conventional surface-testing methods may not reveal differences between an item's outer layer and its internal composition, creating potential risks during valuation.
According to IGM, GOLDSENSE addresses this challenge through technology capable of assessing metal composition at depths of up to 7 mm from a single side, with a combined assessment depth of up to 14 mm when tested from both sides. The company states that this enables the device to examine subsurface characteristics without cutting, scratching or otherwise damaging the jewellery.
The testing process involves three steps: placing the jewellery on the device's testing pad, positioning the smart probe against the selected area and viewing the purity reading on a connected mobile screen. The customer-facing display allows buyers and sellers to observe the results during the evaluation process, supporting greater transparency at the retail counter.
Unlike conventional benchtop X-ray fluorescence (XRF) analysers, GOLDSENSE is described as operating without an ionising radiation source. Its portable design is intended to simplify counter-level testing and reduce the infrastructure and operational requirements associated with radiation-based equipment.
The device also incorporates Bluetooth connectivity for digital reporting, allowing test results to be recorded and shared electronically. According to the company, API integration enables businesses operating multiple locations to connect testing records with existing inventory management or enterprise software, supporting centralised documentation and audit trails.
For jewellery retailers, gold loan companies and other businesses handling precious-metal transactions, accurate purity assessment remains an important part of valuation and risk management. Portable testing solutions that combine subsurface analysis with digital recordkeeping could help streamline these processes while improving the visibility of test results.
Through GOLDSENSE, IGM is positioning portable, technology-enabled purity verification as a practical tool for businesses seeking faster testing, improved documentation and greater transparency during gold transactions.
