Bengaluru: Dr Chetan Kumar Mehta, Chairman and Managing Director of Laxmi Diamonds Bengaluru and National President of the India Jewellery Division at the India Bullion and Jewellers Association (IBJA), is set to make his silver-screen debut with the upcoming Kannada action drama Bail.
Dr Mehta will portray Santosh Rana, a pivotal character in the film, marking an unusual crossover from jewellery manufacturing and trade leadership into cinema. The film, directed by Pavan Wadeyar, stars Dr Shiva Rajkumar.
Within the jewellery industry, Dr Mehta is known for his work in traditional closed-setting diamond jewellery and for developing the category through manufacturing and wider market distribution. He established Laxmi Diamonds Bengaluru in 2007, building the business from its South Indian base into a wider operation with research and manufacturing capabilities in Mumbai and distribution networks extending to markets including Dubai, Singapore and Malaysia.
His industry involvement has also extended beyond business. Dr Mehta has served three consecutive terms as President of the Jewellers’ Association Bengaluru and has been associated with trade platforms including the South Jewellery Show and Silver Show of India.
His contributions to entrepreneurship and the jewellery trade have also earned him industry recognition, including the Jewellery World Awards Young Entrepreneur of the Year and the Star of Karnataka honour.
Dr Mehta’s entry into cinema followed an approach from director Pavan Wadeyar, who saw him as a fit for the character of Santosh Rana. Taking on the role presented a markedly different creative challenge from his work across jewellery manufacturing, business and industry representation.
For the jewellery trade, his appearance in a commercial Kannada production represents an interesting crossover between two very different worlds. From building a business around traditional diamond craftsmanship to stepping onto a film set, Dr Mehta’s latest chapter reflects a willingness to move beyond established professional boundaries and explore a new creative arena.
