Saudi Arabia: Archaeologists have discovered a collection of more than 100 gold, silver and gemstone jewellery pieces stored inside a ceramic jar in Diriyah, Saudi Arabia.

According to reports, the discovery was made during excavations conducted by archaeologists from the Saudi Heritage Commission. The site of Diriyah was once located along an important route connecting Basra in southern Iraq with Mecca on the west coast of Saudi Arabia more than 1,000 years ago.

The jewellery hoard included pieces crafted in gold and silver, along with gemstone ornaments. The collection was found inside a ceramic jar, pointing to the possibility that it may have been deliberately buried for safekeeping during an earlier period of regional activity.

Excavations at the site have also uncovered gypsum water basins and the remains of residential buildings. Researchers also found fragments of pottery and glass inside the structures, offering further insight into daily life and settlement patterns in the area.

Organic remains from the settlement have reportedly been dated between A.D. 743 and 753. The jewellery hoard is believed to have been buried during the Abbasid Caliphate, which was established in A.D. 750 and continued until 1258, when it ended following the Mongol invasion.

The discovery highlights the cultural and historical value of jewellery beyond ornamentation. Such finds help researchers understand trade routes, craftsmanship, material culture and the role of jewellery in personal wealth, identity and preservation across ancient societies.

For the jewellery and heritage sectors, the Diriyah discovery offers an important glimpse into early metalwork, gemstone use and the movement of luxury objects across historic pilgrimage and trade routes in the region.
