NGV Brings Cartier’s Royal Jewels & Iconic Timepieces to Melbourne
Australia: The Cartier exhibition opened at NGV International in Melbourne on 12th June 2026 and will continue until 4th October 2026. Organised by the National Gallery of Victoria (NGV), the show features rare jewels, watches, royal tiaras and historic Cartier pieces, making it one of Australia’s major jewellery exhibitions this year.

The exhibition brings together more than 300 creations from the legendary French luxury house. The display includes royal tiaras, rare watches, precious jewels, archival drawings and historic objects that trace Cartier’s long journey in jewellery, design and craftsmanship.

The exhibition is currently being presented in Melbourne after its earlier showcase at London’s Victoria and Albert Museum. For the Australian presentation, it has been expanded with more pieces and special displays, making it one of the biggest Cartier exhibitions ever held in Australia.

A key attraction of the show is the presence of pieces connected to royalty, celebrities and important cultural figures. From elegant tiaras to statement necklaces and rare timepieces, the exhibition highlights how Cartier became closely associated with power, glamour and personal style.

Among the most talked-about pieces is jewellery connected with Hollywood legend Elizabeth Taylor, including her famous ruby necklace. The exhibition also reflects Cartier’s strong relationship with royal families and high society, showing how the brand’s designs became part of some of the world’s most memorable fashion and jewellery moments.

Beyond the beauty of the pieces, the exhibition also focuses on Cartier’s technical skill. Visitors will be able to see how the maison worked with gemstones, precious metals and detailed design to create pieces that continue to influence luxury jewellery even today.

The exhibition design has also been created to give visitors an immersive experience. Developed in collaboration with Dutch design studios Studio Sabine Marcelis and CLOUD, the setting uses light, colour and materials to create a dramatic atmosphere around the jewels.

With its mix of history, craftsmanship, glamour and rare design, the Cartier exhibition is expected to become one of Melbourne’s major cultural attractions this winter. It also shows how jewellery exhibitions are no longer limited to collectors and historians, but have become powerful cultural experiences for a wider audience.

For the NGV, the exhibition adds another strong name to its Melbourne Winter Masterpieces series and strengthens the city’s position as a destination for international art, fashion and luxury showcases.

Founded in 1861, the NGV is Australia’s oldest public art museum and holds a major collection of more than 76,000 artworks across different periods, cultures and styles.
