GJEPC and GIA Train Customs Officers in Diamond and Gemstone Identification

The initiative aims to strengthen regulatory understanding and technical expertise among Customs officials, enhancing efficiency and compliance within India’s gem and jewellery trade ecosystem.

Mumbai: The Gem & Jewellery Export Promotion Council (GJEPC), in association with the Gemological Institute of America (GIA), organised a specialised training programme for newly appointed Customs Officers as part of its ongoing knowledge-sharing initiatives

Conducted from 2 to 9 March 2026, the programme focused on building practical and technical understanding of cut and polished diamonds, as well as coloured gemstones. The training aimed to familiarise officers with identification techniques, along with key trade processes and operational practices within the gem and jewellery industry.

A total of 16 Customs Officers participated in the programme, which concluded on 9 March 2026.

The training also included an overview session conducted by Mithlesh Pandey, along with Siddhesh Mohite, on the Kimberley Process (KP). The session covered the regulatory framework governing the import and export of rough diamonds, highlighting the role of the Kimberley Process in ensuring traceability and promoting responsible trade practices.
